Rolex Day Date 18k Florentine 1963

The quintessential Oyster-cased dress watch, the Day-Date was first introduced in 1956 and quickly became one of the most popular luxury watches in the world. This watch is a perfect expression of elegant style, while never sacrifice usability or reliability.

Our Reference (1806 Florentine) is an update to the 6500 and was introduced in 1959. Early 1800 models had the very rare cal. 1555. Our reference is even more rare because of the Florentine finished case and a pie pan dial with so called „cigarette boat“ hands which were only used in 1963/64 on Day-Dates. Enthusiast will also notice the doorstop hour markers at six and nine o'clock.

Fun fact: This nickname „cigarette boat“ hands was invented by collectors in the 1980s and refers to the gold hour and minute hands, which have a different shape to the ones we are used to seeing on these four-digit Day-Date watches. Instead of a cigarette, the nickname here refers to cigarette speedboats, also known as go-fast boats. These go-fast boats have a design that features a long narrow platform and a sharp gliding hull, just like the shape of the hands on this Day-Date (especially the shorter minute hand).
